Things to Keep in Mind When Looking For Health Insurance

By Ethan Kalvin

If you are in need of health insurance, and are not sure where to turn, then there are some things that you definitely need to know about finding yourself an affordable health insurance plan, with premiums you can afford.

Step one to finding a health insurance plan is to know what the laws are in your state. Each state is different, and you could qualify for government assistance. Look online at your state's Department of Insurance site and you can contact insurance companies through a broker or directly.

Getting information on the premiums and deductibles are easy. The insurance policy itself needs to be scoured for details. If it has a pre existing condition clause, and riders or exclusions, these all need to be known. Read the fine print and ask questions.

After looking at your choices, figure out what you can afford. Low premiums equal high deductibles or copays, usually. Compare several plans. Look at the big picture to see how much you will pay overall.

Lastly, be sure to read and fill out the application for your health insurance very carefully. Any mistakes can come back to haunt you. Be honest about pre-existing medical conditions--even tiny discrepancies can make your policy null and void. Remember: The less insurance carriers pay out, the more money they make. So they're looking for those mistakes.
