Grab Bars and fall prevention

By K Hansen

Grab bars are a great addition to any home. I myself had never even heard to them until they where needed. I never even noticed them in public restrooms until I was in need. I now see how great they are to have and how useful they can be.

In showers, grab bars are ideal for any age to be able to hold onto. The shower can be a very dangerous place. They are great to aid in getting in and out of the shower even rinsing your hair. I can't even count the number of times I have slipped and was very thankful that I had something to hold onto.

There are safety aids made for the bathtub as well. They securely attach to the side of the tub they are great for stabilizing when getting in or out of the tub. It is nice to have the option to be able to still take therapeutic bath's.

Another place to secure is the commode. It can be difficult at time to raise and lower from a low toilet. One idea is to purchase a taller toilet but the easiest and least expensive solution is to use a toilet safety frame and a toilet seat riser. The toilet seat riser's decrease the height of transition while the safety frame aids in transfer.

Kitchens are another area where senior citizens and people with mobility problems may need help. Being able to stand steady for long periods of time can be painful. Having something to balance your weight on can go a long way toward alleviating that pain. Grab bars can make tasks like putting dishes in the dishwasher or a casserole in the oven, possible.

A well lit area is always a good idea. I would make sure that hallways, stairways are well lit to prevent falls. There are a number of services available for those that may need them. The recipient wears a little remote pendant around there neck, if they fall and can't get up they just push the button and help is on its way.
