Information On Hangover Home Remedies

By Gift Mabuza

Hangover remedies that claim to cure any hangover unfortunately often invite people to drink more alcohol than they should. Over the years, untold numbers of cures for a hangover have been devised but the best one of all is to refuse a drink. Hangover cures and remedies have a tough job because a hangover has many areas that cause distress, the biggest one being dehydration.

It is known fact that some drinks give you worse hangovers than others due to the actions of impurities contained in the alcohol. How quickly you become drunk is also often down the level of these impurities and just how severe the hangover will be. It's always best, if possible to stick with the clear drinks like Gin or Vodka as these have been filtered and contain les impurities than the likes of Whisky and Cognac.

However, the real reason we have hangovers and strive for perfect hangover remedies is because we simply drink too much. This is often the case when we drink a great deal in a short space of time or maybe we drink on an empty stomach, but at the end of the day, no one made us do this. It is well known that if you drink slowly, the body is able to process the alcohol and other toxins before they get to a level that gets us drunk. As a consequence the world has become full of hangover remedies, some of which are quite ludicrous and talking about cures for a hangover has become a common topic in bars around the world. But finding an effective cure for a hangover is still being sought, apart from not drinking of course.

Re-hydrating your body before you sleep is an easy and free cure for a hangover but how many people do this before they retire and prevent the hangover next morning? A quick and easy hangover remedy is part prevention and part hangover cure and involves a couple of headache pills with a large glass of mineral water before bed and then another large glass, this time of orange juice, when you get up the following morning. Even though this method does work quite well, as with many things in life, the older you get the lower your tolerance to alcohol becomes and you find all those hangover remedies that once worked when you were more youthful, are becoming less effective.

Eating bananas which contain high volumes of fructose, and potassium, can help as a cure for a hangover because these are two things the body loses when you drink. Fortunately, bananas contain a natural antacid to help with the nausea and because they are high in magnesium they can help relax those pounding blood vessels that cause a hangover headache.

The hangover remedy hardest to stomach is 'Bloody Mary' which contains Vodka and tomato juice plus other ingredients as often, the last thing you feel like drinking when you are hung-over is more alcohol. Ultimately, your best defense is knowing when to stop and, when to refuse that 'one for the road' suggestion!
