Eating Healthy: The Advantages

By Angela Brunno

Being a healthy eater requires you to become both educated and smart about what healthy eating actually is. Being food smart isn't about learning to calculate grams or fat, nor is it about studying labels and counting calories. Although it is important to know how to read a label and know what kind of fat you may be eating, there is much more to eating healthy.

Healthy eating is all about balanced and moderate eating, consisting of healthy meals at least three times a day with a couple of low fat snacks. Making sure you are eating plenty of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and plant-based proteins is also important. Eating 5-6 smaller meals is also a good suggestion as then your body should always have enough fuel to keep it going.

Variety is what healthy eaters choose for their diets, they do not limit themselves to a certain food group. For instance, a if a person is a vegetarian that doesn't mean that they just eat vegetables, they also need to make sure they are consuming an adequate amount of protein. The same goes for meat eaters. As long as they are eating a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, they are most likely pretty healthy.

If you are giving your body what it needs to function well, then you most likely feel good and in control. Although a person may overeat at times, or eat foods that are less than healthy, that is not too big of a deal if it is done in moderation. Christmas can be a killer for some, but if this is the only time of year that you eat less than nutritious, you most likely are still a very healthy person.

A healthy eater is a good problem solver. Healthy eaters have learned to take care of themselves and their eating with sound judgement and making wise decisions. Healthy eaters are always aware of what they eat, and know the effect that it will have on their bodies. It is a way of life, a habit if you will.

If you do not have control over your eating habits then you probably feel like you have poor eating habits and it doesn't matter what you eat because "it won't help anyway." Other areas of your life may seem out of control as well. You need to take control of your life and examine what you can do to feel more in control.

I do want to stress that if you are restricting foods that you enjoy such as chocolate or french fries that this can be a bad thing. Feelings of resentment can build and lead to a binge on just the food you were resisting. You then may feel those old feelings of guilt.

If you are looking to lose weight, have more energy, reduce your risk for certain disease, and live longer, then you owe it to yourself to start eating better today! Think about it as a slow progression toward healthy habits that can improve your life, and those closest around you as well!
