What is pH? pH is a number that represents how acidic or how basic your pool or spa water is. The scale ranges from 0 to 14 but in a pool we only deal with 6 to 8.
Making Swimming Comfortable Low and high pH readings in your swimming pool can make your swim very unpleasing. High pH can cause your skin to dry out and itch. Even your hair and eyes will dry out. Low pH is acidic and can cause burning on the skin and eyes, not bad burning but uncomfortable burning.
Low pH is like swimming in battery acid and high pH is like taking a dive into baking soda powder. None of those things sound pleasing. But perfect pH is like swimming in bottled water or tear drops, which never burn your eyes or dry out your skin.
Keeping Your Water Clear Pools with perfect pH are usually crystal clear if all your other chemicals are correct and there is no debris. In fact even low pH can make your pool clear, but that's not a good thing. Just because your water is clear doesn't mean it's safe, it can be deceiving. But High pH can make your water cloudy. It's one of the leading causes of cloudy water in most pools.
Protect Your Filter System Low pH can cause corrosion in your filter system. Remember it's very acid, it would be like pouring acid on your filter system, not very good. Make sure to keep your pH in check to avoid this problem.
If you pH is high it can start to scale. That means the water leaves a thin milky film where ever the water goes meaning your filter system. This can cause slow water flow and your heater will work twice as hard causing you to use more power.
Perfect pH and Sanitizers Low and high pH are bad for sanitizers. Low pH eats up sanitizer and high pH let's it hang around longer, there is no perfect middle unless your pH is at the proper level.
