How Swords Still Remain In Public Eye Even Today

By Chris Channing

Most are familiar with a sword as a weapon. This is indeed what they have been in the past, but it's obvious that today's technology has produced better weapons. Even so, swords serve their purpose in a modern society; albeit a much less dangerous one.

Buying a more expensive sword usually means there is going to be more customization on it- whether it be the hilt, blade, or scabbard. Scabbards are usually an optional item, since many of today's swords are being put on display instead of being put to actual use. Sword manufacturers have made qutie a few impressive-looking swords; the sky is the limit with jewels, metals, and excellent craftsmanship.

Video games are one reason while swords will seldom lose their appeal. Video games such as the Final Fantasy series will commonly have main characters that brandish extravagant swords. This alone has put the manufacturers in overdrive to create swords that resemble what is seen in today's video games. Although it may sound easy enough, this usually means they have to obtain expensive rights to do so, which is why video game swords usually cost more.

Dueling of sorts is still considered a competitive sport even today. There are several variations of dueling that are in existence, but fencing is one of the most popular. Fencing is a fun and safe way to reenact epic war battles, all while making it a disciplined sport that requires much practice and training to do well in. For those in love with medieval war, this is a very good sport to get into.

Although less popular, swords are sometimes still used even today as attack weapons. They are harder to conceal than knives, so their use is usually nonexistent. Even still, some militaries around the world include swords in their inventories. The U.S. branches of militaries, for instance, will commonly give swords to officers of rank who are considered to have honored themselves and their nation.

Decorations around the house are great to obtain to impress visitors, as well as to make a home more interesting to live in. Swords make great wall decorations, and serve good purpose as outside ornaments as well. Swords are especially great for a hunting room showcase, but they have found their place in living rooms, bed rooms, and everywhere in between as well. Decorative swords are usually fairly expensive, so obtaining a fun decoration isn't so much of a problem these days.

In Conclusion

The appeal of swords will likely never go away- they are a part of human history. They have, at some point, been used all around the world in most major conflicts. Although they aren't used much anymore, they still serve as symbols, reminders of what was, and fun house decorations that are sure to impress.
