Selecting The Right Computer Desk For Children

By Tony Maronyer

A computer desk for children has several requirements that the buyer should keep in mind before making a purchase.

Be sure and take your child with you as you will need them to be a model to go by to get the best desk for your child. Here are a few helpful tips:

1. The height of the child is important. It should be able to sit with both feet flat on the floor when working at the desk. The panel for the keyboard should be at the height of the elbows.

The computer desk should provide enough room for textbooks, keyboard, mouse and computer monitor. It should be ergonomic and comfortable above all other things like color or style.

2. It is important to select a computer desk that provides enough room and storage for all activities. This includes working or playing at the desk. It is important to keep in mind that the child has to sit in front of the desk and should therefor test the desk extensively.

3. Another factor that should play a role is the price and material of the computer desk. The price range can differ by a few thousand Dollars. You should also keep in mind that children will usually damage the computer desk sooner or later.

If the child is five years old, buy something that is on the inexpensive side because you would need to change the desk every year or so until the child becomes a teenager. Once they become a teenager, then you would not need to change desks very often.

4. Metal, wood or plastic? You can find computer desks made out of metal, hardwood and plastic. The least expensive type would be those made out of plastic materials, such as the Rubbermaid brand. These are not very durable.

Metal and hardwood desks are both very durable and will last for a very long time, some even for a lifetime. A rule of thumb is that metal computer desks will usually show signs of wear and tear after a few years while that is not the case with desks made of hardwood.

5. The computer desk should provide enough room for computer equipment like printers, scanners or routers. The size requirements of laptops and desktop computers are very different and should be considered.

There is a huge market for computer desks. We live in a computerized world. Children are introduced to computers in kindergarten.

A first computer usually also means the purchase of the first computer desk for the child. They do tend to go hand in hand these days.
