What Is Total Alkalinity

By Matthew Giovanisci

What is Total Alkalinity? Total Alkalinity is the measure of the ability of water to resist pH change. So basically its the amount of Alkalinity needed to help the pH reading to remain stable and not bounce around.

The pH bodyguard, that's one way to think of it. The pH balance of your swimming pool is very unstable, in fact many things can cause it to move up and down including: - Everyday Swimming - Rain water - adding any type of pool chemical

Alkalinity will protect the pH from drastically moving when these things occur. The ideal range for most pools is between 125-150ppm.

Add Alkalinity to Your Pool Simple! Just sprinkle the alkalinity powder right into your water. Even distribute across the entire pool. It dissolve extremely quick.

Now I'm sure you've heard about adding baking soda to your pool to raise your alkalinity. It will work but it may take a lot more baking soda than it would alkalinity. Baking soda is for baking.

If both your pH and your alkalinity is low, just adding alkalinity will increase both. Kill two birds with one stone.

Sometimes your pH will be and high and your alkalinity will be low. To correct this just make sure you bring down the pH before adding alkalinity or your pH may go too high. If you want to bring down both pH and alkalinity then just add a pH decrease chemical.
