What You Probably Do Not Know About Hair Care

By Kristy Scott

Hair care is a wide field of study. You think you already know everything about how to take care of your crowning glory but you will be surprised to find out that there are many things about it that you are not aware of.

Below are some practical information about hair care that you probably do not know about but you should:

Washing hair daily is not necessary

How often you need to wash your hair ultimately depends on these factors--your hair type, lifestyle, and the environmental conditions around you. Those with oily hair, those who live in a dusty environment, and those who have an active lifestyle that can easily get one's hair dirty and soiled, it is a must to shampoo every other day.

Now if your hair is dry, if your environment does not mess up your hair that much, or if you work or live in enclosed areas that are dust and debris free, then it is all right to just wash your hair once a week. Shampooing everyday can remove the hair natural essences that will keep it from drying out.

Vigorous rubbing and too much heat can damage the hair

Even if you are using high quality hair equipment such as CHI original, it would be advisable not to use your flat irons or curling irons too frequently because constant exposure to heat can dry and damage one's mane. Of course, there are tricks that can minimize damage such as applying a heat protector spray before using an iron.

As for rubbing vigorously, this habit can fray and roughen the cuticle of the hair. The hair cuticle, which is the outer layer of the hair shaft, protects the hair's inner filaments. If you constantly rub your hair forcefully, this can result in hair breakage and damage.

Excessive hair treatments and certain hairstyles can damage hair roots

Tying or braiding your hair too tightly and undergoing too frequent hair treatments like perms and dyes can damage your hair especially the roots. You should always follow your stylist's recommendations as to how long the interval should be in between hair treatments.

Brushing or combing hair when wet can result in breakage

Before you set out to brush or comb your hair, make sure that you dry it first. Dry blot your hair gently by using a towel. You can use a hair dryer if your hair is damp but not when it is still sloppy wet.

Your diet reflects in the quality of your hair

A nutritious and well balanced diet is essential for maintaining glorious hair. It is important to include in your diet foods that are rich in protein, iron, and essential amino acids that are effective in fostering hair growth. Examples of such food are lean red meat, liver, kidneys, fish, cheese, egg, milk, beans, lentils and dark green leafy vegetables.

Stress can deteriorate your hair's condition

Your hectic lifestyle has an adverse effect on your hair. Stress increases the production of androgens, which are known to be killers of hair follicles. This can result in hair loss, baldness and damage.

Knowing these things and more will help you take care of your beloved hair properly and more effectively.
