Everyday hazards

By Jeff Cline

Many adults and children are harmed every year from household hazards. These injuries could have been avoided with awareness. Some are obvious and others less obvious, but at any count proper measures should be taken.

Too many times it is children that fall victim to a household hazard. Parents lived a rushed lifestyle and many times take much attention away from what is going on around the house.

The most avoidable is surely children being the victim of accidental poisoning. Kids are curious and will not hesitate to taste things. Especially things that look like kooilade or candy such as cleaning products and pills.

Outside our homes in the yard lie many hazards also. There could be snakes and poisons critters. There are also the natural hazards lying around such as jagged or slippery surfaces and rocks or sharp sticks.

Electrical shock is a major household hazard Caution should be taken. Kids are very curious and tend to stick things where they should not. This could be avoided by using socket protectors.

Burns and scalding can also be avoided. Take the time to have your water heater checked to make sure the temperature is at a safe setting. Keep cooking out of the reach of small children.

A hazard that causes injury and even death around the home is unsafe firearms. Keep firearms out of the reach of children. Always use caution when cleaning and handling firearms.

First we should know basic first aid so if we are faced with an accident we can handle it properly. We should also be aware of our surroundings and implement safety measures to protect our families from these everyday hazards.
