The Stanley Cup And The National Hockey League

By Jay Mowa

During the season each NHL team plays a complex roster of 41 regular season games at home and 41 games away. Each team plays 10 inter conference games(not in their own conference) during the season. This consists of one game played against each team in two of the three divisions of the opposing conference.

All NHL teams also play 40 games against other opposing conference teams. They will hence play a total of four games against every one of ten teams. Every NHL team also plays 32 games in their own division which consists of eight games played against each of the other four teams.

A winning game for a team is worth 2 points. A losing game in overtime or a shootout wins the team 1 point and a loss in regulation time gets zero points.

In every division the champion is the team winning the most points in the regular season. Every conference has three divisions and each divisional champion along the five next best teams will make up the Stanley Cup playoff roster for every conference. This comprises a total of eight teams from each conference which will enter the playoffs.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs two teams will play a best of seven total games. The team which loses the best of seven is eliminated and the winner goes on to the next round. If the game is a draw at the end of the regular three periods overtime periods will be played until there is a winner.

Every overtime period will consist of twenty minutes played by full teams of five players. The winning team is the first team to score a goal in overtime at which point the game ends. This is sudden death overtime as it is usually called.
