Finding Your Profitable Blog Niche - How To Do It

By Lyndsey S Waters

Discovering a profitable blog niche should be an action carefully researched before acting. If you're only purpose is to start a blog about your family, then obviously it doesn't matter what subject you cover. On the other hand, if you're wanting to make money from blogging, the niche you choose is very important. You'll need to know how much competition there is in a niche, how well does it pay, are there any affiliate programs for your niche and so forth.

What I'll be trying to do here is to get you thinking outside the box when choosing a profitable niche. I'll show you that it doesn't matter if you're a new blogger to the Internet or a seasoned pro. My tactics will allow you to search out profitable niches in any field.

Isolating Your Interests

One of the first considerations for a new blogger is his personal interests. This is important because a blogger who is passionate and knowledgeable about a particular subject will not only have an easy time coming up with ideas for new blog posts but will also likely be highly successful. This success will likely be attributable to the fact that blog visitors can sense his passion for the subject matter and greatly appreciate the knowledgeable posts which are informative and accurate.

The interests of the blogger may run the gamut from subjects which are widely popular to subjects which are of interest to only a small subset of the population. However, there will likely be interested readers regardless of the subject of the blog. Therefore bloggers are not discouraged from opting to blog about even the most obscure subjects. However, bloggers who are seeking financial gain through high blog traffic should consider selecting a topic which appeals to a larger audience.

Sizing Up Your Competition

Once a blogger has selected one or more subjects he is considering for a blog, it is time to begin evaluating the competition. This includes viewing other blogs covering the same subject matter. This will not only give the blogger a good indication of whether or not the market is already saturated with blogs on this subject and the quality of the existing blogs on this subject. Based on this information the blogger can make an informed decision about whether or not he feels capable of competing for blog traffic with the existing blogs.

Deciding What the Purpose of Your Blog Should Be

Another consideration the potential new blogger needs to consider is the purpose of the blog. Blogs are created everyday for one reason or another. Maybe someone's ticked off at a company and starts a negative blog about the company. Perhaps an activist starts a blog to recruit other like minded people to their cause. Those are all well and fine. However, if you're starting a blog to make income from, you'll want to first make sure there is enough interest in your niche to drive traffic to your blog. Without traffic, you'll just be blogging to be blogging!

Now having said that, I can't tell you how important it is that you choose a niche that is capable of driving traffic to your blog. Don't think that just because a topic is popular, that you'll be successful. Many new bloggers in the make money online niche end up failing miserably because they never took into account the difficulty in getting their blogs ranked high enough to generate traffic. This is probably one of the most saturated niches on the Internet and I continually see new bloggers waste time and money on it when they could have already dominated a different niche and be making money from it.
