Storage Space Made Easy

By Mike Roberts

For some of us things have changed a lot in the last several years. The value of our homes have fallen dramatically and for many of us planning to move up into a larger home this has caused more than a few problems. If you live in California as we do, there are very few buyers and lots of sellers. You can find great buys, but what can you do with your current home since you probably won't get it sold.

Our family absolutely needs to acquire more storage space in our home. I'm a contractor and would be able to add on to our home, but with the poor conditions that remain in the housing market that doesn't make much sense. I already had installed closet organizers in two bedrooms and that helped a lot. As a matter of fact we could not have gotten along without the needed storage those organizers provided.

We came up with a plan that would take care of our lack of storage space. What I did was to install closet organizers in our other 2 bedrooms. This has the effect of increasing our closet storage as if we had built an extra closet, as most closet organizers increase closet space by up to 50%. As luck would have it this didn't altogether solve our problem.

We only had room for a single car in our 2 car garage and it was pretty unorganized. We really needed to not only organize the space, but to throw away all the items we really didn't need. We could get things from the inside and into the garage if we had an organized place to store everything.

The strategy was to add storage cabinets around the inside of the garage plus a workbench with storage below plus using wall space to hang bicycles and other items. We also constructed a compact storage shed on the side of the house to house the lawnmower and other garden tools. This gave us much more floor and wall space in the garage.

We portioned up the wall space in the garage to accommodate our storage requirements. Almost seventy percent of the usable wall space was utilized for storage racks and cabinets with the remainder being used for hanging items. On the other 30 % wall panels were used with a hook system to get the larger bulkier items up off the garage floor. This planning allowed us to achieve better space utilization.

Garage organizers are somewhat easier to install than closet organizers. The most difficult part is to layout the project correctly so the storage units you can order them. The installation itself is just a matter of following your layout plan. For the cabinets and wall panels you'll need a level, stud finder, screws and a screwdriver or electric drill to complete the project.

All in all this was a great way to produce much more effective space in our current house at a lesser cost. My family has solved our storage issues for the time being and have been able to do it with a minimum investment. By doing this minor home project my family has solved our moving dilemma. We now have the capability to wait for exactly the right time for us to purchase a larger house. Until that day comes we have adequate storage space so that our family can stay easily in our existing home.

Space and storage problems can be taken care of with a simple do it yourself project. It won't cost you an arm and a leg to get it finished. Take a little time and see if a garage organizer can solve your problems.
