Farm Holidays for the Whole Family

By Peter Mason

If exploring the Wild West has always been a dream of yours, there are plenty of dude ranches that can provide you with a variety of activities, beautiful landscapes, and experiences that will help you realize your dream. Ranches are located in most western and southwestern states in the United States, including Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, and Wyoming, so you have many to choose from. You can find them online or call the National Dude Ranch Association for more information.

The activities you will find on these farm holidays vary depending on the time of year you visit, how crowded the ranch is, and where the ranch is located. Most ranches have horse back riding, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Some even have overnight trips into the desert. If you have always wanted to ride a horse into the desert and camp, finding a ranch that offers this activity is not difficult. Ask about the price and if you will need extra insurance coverage in case of emergencies.

Dude ranches were originally created to give people from other regions of the US a chance to see how cowboys and settlers lived. These ranches become so popular, more were opened and the industry took off. In addition to learning how to live off the land, visitors were introduced to beautiful landscapes, sunsets, and wildlife and vegetation they could not see back East. Visitors to these dude ranches would return each year and bring their families.

Nowadays, most dude ranches are more resort-like in nature. They have all the comforts of home, but still allow visitors to get an idea of how people use to live through live demonstrations, activities such as fishing, panning for gold, and cooking over a fire. Many people enjoy relaxing in the sun and meeting new friends during their stay.

If you want to visit a dude ranch, you should make your reservation a few months in advance as many ranches are busy all year long. If you want to learn how to fish, hike in certain areas, or camp overnight in the desert, you should make sure the dude ranch you choose has these types of activities.

When hiking, don't be surprised if you find arrow heads or other artifacts as they are all over the place on dude ranches. Along the way, you will see waterfalls, wildlife, and views that stretch for miles. This is a great way to get some exercise if you hike a few miles each day.

Dude ranches have a lot to offer those who want to spend most of their time outdoors during their vacation. If you enjoy the outdoors, visit a dude ranch and spend a week learning how settlers and others survived in the Wild West. It is a vacation you will never forget.
