How To Drive Long With A Power Golf Swing

By Mick Euan Tait

It makes sense that we all want to know how to drive long off the tee. After all, more distance gives us shorter and easier approach shots to the green. Most of the golf swing instruction e-books offer to teach us how to add more distance. Most of them promise an extra few yards or so.

These guide books, though, are aimed at the beginner or recreational golfer. They teach you everything about the golf swing; from the grip and setup, to the backswing and follow through. But if you are a more accomplished golfer that is looking for more detailed information about how to drive long, you will need to go to the distance golf experts.

LDA

The first website that you should check out is the Long Drivers of America. They are the golf association that runs the Remax Long Drive Championship. They are into learning the power golf swing for attaining maximum golf distance. So, if you want to participate in the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship, then you need to visit the LDA website.

Mike Austin And The Worlds Longest Drive

Incredibly, the Worlds longest golf drive has stood since 1974. Golf legend, Mike Austin, holds the Guinness World Record for longest drive in a tournament, with a 515-yard drive - at the age of 64, during the 1974 U.S. National Senior Open in Las Vegas.

That was using a 43.5 inch steel-shafted, wood-headed driver! So obviously, the golf equipment doesn't have that much to do with how far you can drive the ball. Though, today's long drive champions use 2X or 3X, extra stiff shafts that are up to 50 inches, and driver lofts that are as low as 5 or 6 degrees.

Learn How To Drive Long

Most of us have no intention to compete in a long drive championship; we just want to learn how to drive long and to generally improve our golf game. Yet, if you have a respectable grip and swing, it doesn't automatically mean that you will be long off the tee. The one factor that you need to work on is your golf club head speed. Every 1 mph increase in golf swing speed relates to about 2.5 yards of distance. So, if you can increase your swing speed, you will increase your distance.

There are other factors involved if you want to learn how to drive long off the tee. Golf fitness training and increased flexibility go along way to improving your golf distance, as well as your over-all golf game. Another aspect of your game that you should learn is the mental game of golf. The above golf subjects are usually disregarded by the majority of golfers, but they are very important if you want to really improve your game.

Golf Instructor

If you really want to learn how to drive long, then look for a professional golf instructor who knows what is essential for distance golf. If you can only hit drives of 200 yards, then adding only a few extra yards to your drives won't help you that much. You need to find someone that has been at your level and who has learned how to drive 350 to 430 yards.
