Preventing Hair Loss : Stop Counting Hairs in the Sink

By David U. Goodman

Make no mistake about it. Some hair loss is not preventable. Every one of us loses 100-150 hairs a day in the natural cycle of hair growth and death. It is normal and should not be cause for concern. Further, larger amounts of hair loss can occur at specific times in life - illness, surgery, pregnancy, life-changing events, anxiety and stress, and certain diseases. Again, these are treatable and, in most cases, temporary. More-than-normal hair loss can be prevented in several ways:

1. Keep your body in good physical shape. Make sure that your diet is filled with nutitious foods including essential oils, vitamins and protein. And make sure that you get plenty of exercise. Exercise increases bloodflow and ensures that the nutrients that you consume are made available to your whole body - including your scalp. Good bloodflow in your scalp nourishes the hair follicles that are key to healthy hair growth.

2. Stop hurting your hair. Severe procedures such as coloring, permanents and harsh shampooing will cause hair loss. When your hair and scalp are under attack and damaged the scalp can't produce new hair as quickly as it falls out. Blow dryers and curling irons also fall into this category - them make hair dry and cause it to break off more than normal; avoid dry heat for your hair as much as possible.

3. Offload the stress in your life. If you seem to live in a stressful environment, or you lose lots of sleep your hair will fall out - but you may have bigger health issues on the horizon. Lose the stress - it can definitely cause hair loss.

4. Use topical treatments for your scalp. Essential oils and combinations of herbs can be very helpful in keeping follicles open and productive.

5. Use a good medical product. Find a quality product targeted specifically for hair restoration and stick with it. Many are available - Provillus is the number one recommended solution.

6. Start early. As soon as you experience hair loss that has been confirmed not to be a result of another health condition, begin your investigation of the wide variety of treatments available. You will have to experiment and you will have to be patient. Many products require 3-6 months before you see visible results.

7. Never give up. Always be on the lookout for new advances in hair loss research, but keep using the product that works best for you now. Medical research into the causes and cures for hair loss is ongoing and aggressive - permanent, effective treatments get better every year.

If after following the steps above you still can't find a product that delivers the results you're looking for, then you might consider a wig, toupe, hair piece, extension or even hair transplant. These are all last resorts and some can be very expensive. If hair loss is causing you a great deal of pain or affecting your sense of well-being you owe it to yourself to find a remedy that works for you.
