Save Money Ideas - Holiday Spending Tips

By Ginnie Wilburn

No doubt most of us are feeling the effects of the low economy. It is definitely a time for pursuing "save money ideas." This is especially true for the rapidly approaching Christmas season. With each passing day, our children become more overjoyed with excitement as their favorite time of year approaches. Their Christmas list is filled with the hottest toys, amazing technology gadgets and other thrilling delights.

Most people love to give presents. In fact, a lot of people would rather give a gift than receive a gift. There is nothing more special than to look upon a loved ones face and see their sparkling eyes and radiant smile, when they open our gift. It is great to be able to give a loved one a special gift and still know that in the process you took advantage of great "save money ideas."

You can take advantage of "save money ideas" this Christmas season by doing a small amount of advance preparation and using some foresight. These money tips are provided as a way to help you manage your money effectively for the Christmas season.

1. Look at your budget and compose your Christmas shopping list. You will need to take some time to reflect upon your list. After you decide upon the names for your gift list, place an estimated amount by each name based upon your budget constraints. Make it a key point not to go over your budget. This is a critical factor in being successful with "save money ideas."

When you begin your shopping it is likely you will see an item you would love to give but it is not within your budget. Just keep on shopping and remember there are plenty of wonderful gifts lurking around the corner that will work for your budget. Don't be afraid to step outside your normal gift giving items and give something unique. Often these gifts end up being favorites.

2. Get started shopping now. Early sales and missing all the crowded malls are big advantages to shopping early. Consider shopping online: you will find some great "save money ideas" for your gift shopping without having to leave the house. This will save you valuable time, which you can then apply toward decorating your home; making some special holiday treats or just spending some memorable time with loved ones.

3. Budget your food. The grocery bill seems to keep getting bigger each time we shop. This year why not have a potluck holiday meal. If you are hosting the holiday meal at your home, then instead of serving two meat dishes, serve only one. This is one of those "save money ideas" that will make your budget smile and no one is likely to care otherwise. Great conversation and recipe exchanges frequently take place when guests add to the festivities with their own special dish.

4. Limit your travel. Traveling expenses can easily add up. Try to stay home this Christmas, if possible. If you must travel in order to spend time with loved ones, then pack sandwiches and snacks. This can save with food expenses for the trip. If you are traveling via car, then driving slower will give you better gas mileage. If you need to fly, then be sure to book your flight early to get a good price. This will be a key consideration in your Christmas "save money ideas.
