Why go on an Adventure Cruise?

By Willie Strongarm

The Kimberley Region of northwest Australia and the nearly one thousand islands off its coast have been a top attraction for tourists for many years. Offering beautiful secluded bays and beaches, mangroves, rainforests and more, this areas is best explored by boat.

Cruises can be found to fit any interest, from photography and birdwatching to beach combing, fishing and hiking. Longer trips allow for island exploration and swimming in waters that are home to jewel-like fish, dolphins, turtles and more.

You'll get the chance to check out jewel like fish, sea turtles, sharks, birds, whales and even saltwater crocodiles, as well as the unique erosions of Strickland Bay. Check out the pure white silica beach at Hidden Island and the iron mine on Kooland Island.

There's also Aboriginal art, working pearl farms, and the chance to fish near coral reefs or collect oysters. Some cruises will even allow anglers to choose the day's catch as a meal.

Talbot Bay's Horizontal Falls are a sight to be seen, with a real, horizontal waterfall caused by the flow of the tide through a narrow cliff passage. The water builds up in front of the narrow gap faster than it can go through creating a water level difference of four to six meters on either side, and making a waterfall between the bays.

Described as one of the world's greatest natural wonders, these falls should be seen under safe circumstances, such as a cruise. Rough and extreme water conditions in this part of the world have caused many fatalities over the years among sailors and pearl divers.

The good news is that if you're with a company that knows its stuff, you'll be completely safe, with boats passing through the waterfall for a thrill. Of course, if you'd like to see the falls and stay dry, you can do it from above in a seaplane or helicopter.

If you want to get the most time on the islands, look for a cruise that does most of its distance traveling at night. Check out what you'll get on the tour, too - items like fishing and snorkeling gear or all your snacks and meals are sometimes provided, and sometimes cost extra.

Anyone going on an adventure cruise in Australia should take appropriate clothing, including light garments that will keep them cool, a wide brimmed hat, and good walking shoes that can get wet. Don't forget the sunscreen and insect repellent, either, and pack your camera.

Most tours happen during the dry season, between April and November, but some also occur during Australia's wet season, since there are lots of places to shelter in rough weather. Pick your cruise according to what you want to see and how exciting you want the weather to be.

Anyone who loves a real adventure should check out their options when it comes to Kimberley adventure cruises. Pick one that's long enough to let you see it all and get all the cruise details before you leave to have the best experience.
