What are the Benefits of using a Mooncup?

By Sue True

Mooncup is a brand of menstrual cups that are manufactured and sold by a British company. A menstrual cup is a barrier that can be worn inside the vagina to gather menstrual fluid during menstruation. As it does not absorb the fluid and neither does it catches it outside the body, so it is not like a tampon or a pad.

There are two types of menstrual cups. The first one is the disposable variety that is soft and flexible, and is made of polyethylene. Even though it looks like a contraceptive diaphragm but is used for a different purpose. The second type of menstrual cup could be reused and is made of silicon or rubber. It could be used from ten to fifteen years, and Mooncup is one such variety of these.

The safety of menstrual cups is established. They do not cause toxic shock syndrome, unlike tampons, and are monitored by health authorities. However, there is the chance of developing a urinary tract infection or a yeast infection, just like with a tampon or pad.

The Mooncup has more of the benefits than harmful side effects. First of all, as it contains no bleach or perfume, it is good for your health and will not interact with your bodys internal environment. As the surface of the Mooncup is extremely soft, it slides in without difficulty, and would not affect the mucus on the vaginal wall, therefore allowing it carry out its function of cleaning and protecting the vagina. It would not leave any fibres inside your body unlike a tampon, and is made from a non-allergenic type of silicon that would not cause any irritation, eczema, or allergy.

The Mooncup is also considered to be environmentally friendly, which is a fact that is not true of tampons or pads. During entire life an average female uses between ten thousand and fifteen thousand tampons, all of which end up in landfill and in our water systems. We also use up endless amounts of cotton in the making of tampons, and if we are able to reduce our usage of these we could use this cotton for better and more sustainable purposes.

Additionally, the packaging that comes with each tampon and pad is also filling up our landfill with trash. Since the Mooncup is reusable, there is no need for using large amounts of material anymore, or even carrying around a tampon or a pad.

The Mooncup is also cheaper than using tampons or pads. Since you only need to buy one every ten years, you will be saving a large amount of money every year that you would ordinarily spend on disposable products.

Moreover the mooncup is easy to use. The packaging contains comprehensive information on insertion, and once properly inserted you will not be able to feel it. Although it may take a little practice to be able to easily insert it, once you reach that marker you will find this a lot simpler then changing pads after every little while. You will need to pour out the fluid it every four to eight hours, but this is not at all difficult, and because the fluid remains inside, the cup is not messy at all. This could also be used overnight and while playing sports. Between your cycles, you need to disinfect it by boiling it like you would any other piece of equipment.
